Why it is important not to postpone forest demining for later
02.06.2025
In an author's column in Ukrainska Pravda, the director of the Humanitarian Demining Center, Volodymyr Baida, reveals a topic that deserves greater public attention - forest demining.
Ukraine is currently one of the most explosively contaminated countries in the world. Although the state policy implemented by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine currently focuses on clearing agricultural lands, which provides a quick economic effect, forest areas should also become a priority.
"The forest is an extremely popular place where you can meet representatives of all walks of life. People come here to pick mushrooms and berries, have picnics, relax and train. Inter-village trails pass here. Schools, residential areas, sanatoriums, and summer cottages are located near the forests," notes the director of the Center.
It is estimated that about 687,000 hectares of forest in Ukraine are potentially contaminated with explosives. Demining such areas is technically more difficult and many times more expensive – approximately $8,000-12,000 per hectare, compared to about $1,400 for agricultural areas.
At the same time, Volodymyr Bayda emphasizes that postponing forest clearing means exposing people to constant danger. Especially in conditions of potential forest fires or proximity to residential buildings. Especially in the Chernobyl zone, where pollution is also combined with a radiation threat.
"Especially dangerous are forest plantations along roads, trails between villages, and areas around schools. In the event of a forest fire caused by mining or contamination with missile or UAV remnants, the situation generally risks becoming catastrophic: the detonation of shells can pose a threat to settlements within a radius of 20 km. This means the need for emergency evacuation of people while simultaneously making it impossible for fire equipment to reach the scene of the fire, since clearings can also be mined," explains the director of the Center.
What has already been done:
The Center, together with the Ministry of Economy and the United24 platform, launched the first targeted fundraising campaign in Ukraine for humanitarian demining. The selected locations include the Fenevytske and Makarivske forestry in the Kyiv region.
In just a few days, 80% of the required amount was collected, demonstrating the demand from society and donors for forest safety. The collection was closed a little over a month later.
Currently, preparations are underway for the first tenders for demining forest areas within the framework of the Ukraine Facility program - a global program to support the Ukrainian economy from the European Union.
Why is this important:
Forest demining is not just about nature conservation. It is a matter of human safety, community resilience, and the strategic recovery of the country. The Humanitarian Demining Center advocates for the inclusion of forests in national demining planning.
