Humanitarian demining: scope, achievements, plans
25.09.2025
Volodymyr Bayda, Director of the Humanitarian Demining Center (Center), spoke on Radio Kyiv 98 FM about the real scale of contamination of Ukrainian agricultural lands with explosive ordnance (EOD).
As of September of this year, non-technical demining results have determined that over 73,000 hectares of agricultural land are potentially contaminated/contaminated (ICD/CT). This is almost 90% of the total area of land with ICD/CT status.
Among the most affected regions are Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions. Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions were also significantly affected by the GNP.
Over the past year and a half, thanks to the support of the Government of Ukraine, a full-fledged humanitarian demining sector has been formed. An important step in particular was the launch of the program for compensation for the costs of humanitarian demining of agricultural lands (the compensation program), which is being implemented by the Center.
Before the launch of the compensation program, the average cost of demining was about $30,000 per hectare. Today, it has been reduced to about $1,400 per hectare.
We have reduced the cost of demining several times, I am not afraid to say this. And the main thing I want to emphasize is that thanks to the support of international partners and programs such as the Ukraine Facility, we have proven this year that by creating our own humanitarian demining sector in Ukraine, we can make the use of funds much more efficient, including the taxpayers' funds of our partners,” -
Volodymyr Bayda noted.
Separately, during the broadcast, the active implementation of modern technologies for safe, fast, and effective demining in Ukraine was discussed. The Director of the Center spoke about the key ones:
- Blue Eyes is a system that autonomously identifies and marks mines and UXO on the map, and can work without the Internet and cloud services.
- MinesEye is a suspended system that combines modern drone technologies, artificial intelligence, and multi-sensor analysis methods, allowing for accurate identification of hazardous objects and determination of safe zones.
- SF-1 ("pencil") is a means of burning metal shells of explosives right on the spot, without blasting. Previously, it was necessary to collect piles of explosives and blow them up manually, now everything can be done quickly and safely.
- A number of aerial surveillance drones and various robotic equipment.
In addition, Ukraine has its own manufacturers of certified demining machines - both adapted foreign models and completely domestic developments.
For example, the remotely controlled demining system "Germina", created on the basis of the Slovak "Bozena". The Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Tool Plant completely modernized it for Ukrainian needs. And the domestic "Zmiy" was developed from scratch for specific tasks. In general, teams of engineers and developers combine international experience and local innovations", -
the Director of the Center concluded.
📻 On Radio Kyiv 98 FM, Volodymyr Bayda also answered key questions about the Center's future plans, international experience, and localization of demining equipment.
