Humanitarian demining as an element of economic security and reconstruction of Ukraine
09.04.2025
Ukraine shared its experience in creating a humanitarian demining market during the 21st International Symposium "Mine Action 2025", which took place in Croatia on April 1-3. The event brought together over 200 participants from 32 countries.
The symposium, organized by the Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR-CTRO), covered key topics: challenges in humanitarian demining, innovation, financing and strategic planning.
The first day was dedicated to discussing global lessons and analyzing the situation in Ukraine three years after the start of the full-scale invasion. The second day focused on the latest technologies that are changing approaches to demining.
Director of the Humanitarian Demining Center, Volodymyr Bayda, emphasized that humanitarian demining is the initial stage of state restoration.
In his speech, Volodymyr Bayda focused on the launch of the State Program for Compensation for Demining Agricultural Land. The program provides for full coverage of farmers' demining costs through an auction mechanism on the Prozorro platform. This allowed for the creation of a competitive demining market with transparent rules and clear economic guidelines.
More than 1.1 thousand hectares of agricultural land have already been returned to safe use, 49 contracts have been concluded with a total area of 10.7 thousand hectares.
«Humanitarian demining opens up numerous economic opportunities – from optimizing demining costs to exporting technologies and regulatory solutions that can be applied in other countries facing similar challenges. This is not only an investment in security, but also a powerful impetus for the economic recovery and sustainable development of Ukraine.", - emphasized the director of the Center.
