Kharkiv region is the leader in humanitarian demining: results of 2025 and priorities for 2026

Volodymyr Bayda, Director of the Center for Humanitarian Demining, took part in a meeting of the Center for Mine Action Coordination at the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, where he presented the results of the implementation of the program to compensate for the costs of humanitarian demining of agricultural land in 2025 and outlined key priorities for 2026.
In his speech, he emphasized that the Kharkiv region remains one of the most affected regions of Ukraine from mine contamination and at the same time the leader in terms of the volume of actually performed humanitarian demining work.
In 2025, 88 contracts for 18.4 thousand hectares were signed within the framework of the program. hectares with a total value of UAH 1.25 billion.
Of these , 55 contracts for 15.5 thousand hectares are in the Kharkiv region. hectares worth more than UAH 1 billion, which is more than 84% of the total area covered by contracts in 2025.
The actual result is already tangible: in the region there are more than 9 thousand. hectares of land were returned to safe and productive use under 27 contracts in the amount of UAH 535.6 million. This directly affects the restoration of agricultural production, improving community security, creating jobs and economic sustainability of the region.
In 2025, in the Kharkiv region, the work of the Center began to go beyond purely agricultural lands. An agreement has already been signed for humanitarian demining of a school, kindergarten and park with playgrounds in the village of Hrakove, Kharkiv region.
The work will be carried out with funds raised on the UNITED24 platform. The opening of the targeted collection became possible thanks to a joint initiative of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and the Center for Humanitarian Demining.
Outlining plans for 2026, the Director of the Center identified several strategic areas:
- Continuation of the compensation program, taking into account the new prioritization system. For this, the GRIT digital platform is used, which allows you to make decisions based on data and take into account the socio-economic effect of clearing territories as much as possible.
- Scaling the program to other types of territories and objects: infrastructure, forest fund, community lands. It is planned to apply the mechanism, already tested together with the UNITED24 platform, with the involvement of donor funding for demining of territories that are not currently covered by the state program.
- Implementation of quality control of humanitarian demining works. This will ensure uniform standards, increase confidence in the results and reduce the risks of re-contamination. At the same time, it is planned to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Center, in particular in terms of certification of mine action operators.
- Development of digital tools for data collection, analysis and visualization.
- Participation of the Center in the verification of applications for demining in international projects, which will harmonize approaches and increase the effectiveness of international assistance.
Our task for 2026 is not only to maintain the pace of clearing agricultural land, but also to systematically expand the program, raise quality standards and ensure transparent and effective management of resources in the field of humanitarian demining,"
