Innovation in action: how robots are helping to clear Ukrainian lands of mines
28.08.2025
During the national telethon, Volodymyr Bayda, Director of the Humanitarian Demining Center (Center), spoke about modern approaches and innovative technologies used in Ukraine to clear land from explosive ordnance (UXO).
Robots, robotic systems and mechanized demining machines, which are produced in Ukraine, are actively working in Ukrainian fields. "They resemble a tank or large equipment in size and perform colossal volumes of work. Thanks to these technologies, we will be able to cope not like other countries - in decades or centuries, but much faster," said Volodymyr Bayda.
Ukraine already has both manufacturers of its own cars and companies that assemble Western analogues.
"If a group of sappers can cover a hectare of land in a week or two, then a demining machine covers 2–3 hectares per day. Thanks to this, the volume of demined land increases manifold," explained the director of the Center.
Safety and efficiency of work
Volodymyr Bayda emphasized the importance of a combined approach:"The machine prepares the ground, destroys the UXO, after which the sappers go through with mine detectors and collect the remains. Due to the fact that both the machine and people pass through the territory, we minimize the potential risks of explosions on already cleared lands."
At the same time, the director of the Center warned about the danger of re-contamination:
“We are not insured against the fact that fragments of drone warheads and missiles that the occupiers launch over Ukraine almost every night will not fall on the already cleared territories.” The situation in the forest belts remains especially difficult, since at the beginning of the invasion, people independently tried to clear the territories, leaving the IDPs there.
Innovation and integration of artificial intelligence
The center is actively implementing elements of artificial intelligence (AI) into the GRIT digital platform. "We are at the stage of implementing AI into the system that will provide information to demining machines. Of course, these machines can receive any information, but for this you need to build big-data for them. This is what we are doing."
❗️❗️❗️The Director of the Center called for adherence to the basic rules:
🔸If you find unfamiliar objects, do not touch them.
🔸 pay attention to markings and warning signs about mine danger.
