Joint initiative for the cleaning of Ukrainian lands: CGR and Lviv join forces
01.04.2025
The Humanitarian Demining Center and the Lviv City Council signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, laying the foundation for the creation of a single coordination center for humanitarian demining, where it would be possible to gather information, training, innovation, operator certification, quality control and training of operators themselves. This is extremely necessary for the effective clearance of Ukrainian territories from explosive objects.
Why Lviv?
Currently, Ukraine lacks a single coordination center for humanitarian demining that would systematize all developments in this area. Lviv has a unique experience of cooperation with international donors, state and non-state organizations, which makes it a good place to create such a hub.
Volodymyr Bayda, Director of the Humanitarian Demining Center, explains:
«We proposed to combine our active activities in humanitarian demining in the east with educational, informational and analytical segments. That is why we are initiating the creation of a representative office in Lviv. We hope that it will soon become a full-fledged coordination platform that will significantly accelerate the demining of Ukrainian lands.».
Main areas of cooperation
As part of the agreement, the Lviv City Council and the Humanitarian Demining Center will focus on:
▪️creation of a single coordination center for humanitarian demining;
▪️conducting information and educational campaigns on mine risk;
▪️development and implementation of joint programs related to humanitarian demining;
▪️development of international cooperation and coordination of actions;
▪️facilitating the attraction of grants and charitable contributions for projects;
▪️study, analysis and implementation of best practices and innovations in the field of mine action;
▪️providing support for citizens affected by military actions.
One of the key aspects of cooperation is attracting funds from international organizations.
According to Volodymyr Bayda:
«Demining is a large-scale and expensive process that requires significant financial resources. Unfortunately, the state is not able to cover all costs on its own. Therefore, cooperation with Lviv is important not only in the educational and information spheres, but also in working with donors. We hope that this will help to attract and use funds for demining more effectively.».
The Memorandum is an important step towards systemic cooperation aimed at accelerating humanitarian demining in Ukraine. Although the document does not create legal obligations, it lays the foundation for joint initiatives that will make Ukrainian territories safe and contribute to their restoration. The Lviv office will become a key element of this work, helping not only specialists, but also the general public - from children to professional deminers.
Together we are working to make Ukraine safer and closer to restoring peaceful life.
