The GRIT system works in Ukraine, which allows analyzing the level of GNP pollution and provides an analysis of the future of demined land – CGR

The humanitarian demining center together with the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and international partners was developed on the basis Palantir Technologies developed a system GRIT (Ground Rehabilitation through Innovation Technologies). Volodymyr Bayda, director of the Humanitarian Demining Center, told about this on NV radio.
This is not just a system of prioritization that is exchanged earlier or later. This is a system where even satellite images with vortices are analyzed and the software determines what could probably be there. What are these vortices from, what can pollute these soils”, –
he explained.
The platform forms a “digital double” of each land plot and processes more than 20 data sets, including:
- government and commercial registers;
- satellite images of contaminated areas;
- data from demining operators;
- geoinformation on soils and land cover.
Based on these data, experts assess the level of contamination of territories with explosive objects (GNP), determine the sequence of work, predict the state of lands after demining and identify critical objects –, in particular contaminated areas within a radius of 5 kilometers from schools. A separate direction – interpretation of remote sensing data: by the shape and location of the vortex, the software helps to establish the probable type of ammunition and the nature of soil pollution.
Previously, humanitarian demining plans were formed together with territorial communities, while the application of GRIT makes it possible to automate this process based on satellite data. This approach reduces corruption risks, as solutions rely on verified geospatial indicators.
According to Volodymyr Bayda –, now it is not just a picture from a drone. System GRIT even analyzes social aspects, for example, whether people will live in this territory or not.
The analysis in the system also covers the socio-economic context of the territory –, in particular, the perspective of further human habitation and the state of different soil layers, which makes it possible to assess the recovery potential even in areas with large-scale pollution.
A system is being created on the basis of the Humanitarian Demining Center CLEAR, which will integrate all technological solutions into one infospace.
Perhaps this year, or perhaps next year, we will automate everything related to humanitarian demining outside of work in the field. It is very important for us to make these processes automated and transparent”, –
he explained.
Under the past technologies of 20 years ago, centuries would have gone by for demining. Currently, our partners from the World Bank estimate demining in Ukraine at 34 billion dollars and at 10 years of work. But, after our operators began to implement the “Humanitarian Demining program, we see that in three years, when hostilities stop, up to 80% of this territory can be freed up”, ”
the Director of the Humanitarian Demining Centre added.
Humanitarian demining – is the only process that involves the full return of land. Neither military nor operational demining gives full assurance that the land is clean.
This is the process where certified operators clear the ground to the last 10 millimeter wreck. Operators check the ground at a level up to 20-30 centimeters deep. So it's much more complicated, longer. It's a process involving machines, people drones. But this is the only process that brings the earth back to life”, –
he noted.
