The war continues, but the pace of demining is increasing: the director of the Center spoke about achievements and challenges on Ukrainian Radio

Despite active hostilities and constant contamination of territories with explosive ordnance (UXO), Ukraine is demonstrating significant progress in the field of humanitarian demining. Volodymyr Bayda, Director of the Humanitarian Demining Center (Center), told Ukrainian Radio.
The front is stabilized, but the danger continues
"The front has been more or less stabilized - and this makes it possible to work. But it should be remembered that in the 20-kilometer zone along the contact line and the border, humanitarian demining does not take place. Only the military works there," the director of the Center emphasized.
At the same time, the Russian army does not stop shelling. Every fall of a drone, "Shaheed" or missile pollutes the earth again, and this happens not only on the front, but also in peaceful cities. That is why, despite the positive dynamics, the war makes it difficult to fully cover all contaminated territories.
The demining market is developing
Among the most important is that last year the implementation of the state program for compensation of demining costs began. This effectively launched the market for humanitarian demining, as a result of which the number of PMD operators began to grow.
This became possible thanks to the systematic work of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, in particular the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko, who initiated the launch of the compensation mechanism:
"The state has created effective demand. This has allowed mine action operators (MAOs) to work not only with grant funds, but also on market terms. This is an example of an effective public-private partnership," said Volodymyr Bayda.
The interest of foreign partners in the Ukrainian model is growing rapidly.
"The Italian Embassy, for example, is ready to allocate $6 million for humanitarian demining. They use the methodology, analytics, and calculations that we developed at the Center," said the Center's director.
Positive changes are also taking place in cooperation with the United24 platform. Previously, the fund only financed the purchase of equipment, but in the near future – for the first time – direct payments will be made for demining work.
