Challenges and prospects of humanitarian demining in Ukraine
03.02.2025
During the broadcast of the "National Marathon", the Director of the Humanitarian Demining Center, Volodymyr Bayda, shared key details about the state of humanitarian demining in Ukraine. According to him, 2024 was marked by a sharp acceleration of the pace due to the full launch of the humanitarian demining market.
The Director of the Center noted that regional military administrations determine the land plots that need to be demined as soon as possible. In parallel, last year, the Ministry of Economy launched a program to compensate for the costs of humanitarian demining of agricultural lands, which is implemented by the Center.
"Ukrainian agricultural lands are the most important thing, because they need to be brought back into cultivation as soon as possible, and this means jobs and taxes. We know that before the full-scale war, Ukraine fed more than 400 million people from all over the world with its grain. Therefore, agricultural lands are a priority," Volodymyr Bayda noted.
After the successful increase in demining volumes, the main challenge remains the lack of qualified specialists, as the scale of mined areas is significant and teams of mine action operators cannot work continuously.
"With such levels of contamination, there is a shortage of specialists and there will be a shortage in the coming years. Currently, there are over 4,500 sappers and deminers in Ukraine.
"I urge people to go into this specialty, because there are still many such specialists needed. Of course, there is a shortage of personnel, but the pace of their recruitment and training is impressive and growing rapidly," the director of the Center noted.
Additionally, Volodymyr Bayda emphasized that training centers are currently operating within the structures of the Ministry of Defense and the State Emergency Service, which help to quickly and effectively train new specialists in the field of humanitarian demining. In addition, there are free training programs from PMD operators, which open up new opportunities for those who wish to join the humanitarian demining of Ukraine.
Together, we continue to innovate, increase the efficiency and transparency of processes to ensure the safe return of land to productive use and strengthen security in Ukraine.
